From 16 September to 17 December 2023, la Galerie du 19M presents the exhibition Carla Fernández. The Future is Handmade, an immersion into the world of the stylist and designer through her collaborations with Mexican artisans, whose art and savoir-faire she celebrates. As creator, designer, and founder of her eponymous brand, Carla Fernández works at the forefront of ethical fashion, documenting and preserving the textile heritage of the indigenous communities of her native Mexico. With her partner Cristina Rangel and in collaboration with nearly 180 weavers, embroiderers, and woodcarvers that use incredibly rich and diverse traditional techniques, Carla Fernández Casa de Moda’s approach to contemporary fashion, which echoes the territory from which it comes, has a universal appeal, at the intersection of textiles, craft, and the visual arts.

Through a series of workshops, talks, and performances relating to the exhibition, la Galerie du 19M explores the educational dimension of the work produced by Carla Fernández and the artisans she creates with. Open to everyone, this playful cultural programme is part of le 19M project, reflecting CHANEL’s objective to preserve the Métiers d’art of fashion and interior design. Savoir-faire that is in danger of being lost, subject to recruitment pressures, and for which we are committed to encouraging transmission and creative innovation.
In this same vein, la Galerie du 19M and its programming in Paris/Aubervilliers and beyond has a threefold mission: to make these professions known to the general public, to make them desirable, and to spark vocations among youngergenerations.

Inspired by the Manifesto that Carla Fernández wrote on fashion as an act of resistance, the exhibition route is organised into sevensequences and presents some thirty looks and accessories. Continuingthe collaborations initiated between la Galerie du 19M and le 19M’s resident fashion houses, the exhibition presents a number of new designs by Carla Fernández with the bootmaker Massaro, thehatmaker Maison Michel and the goldsmith Goossens.

“For us it was very exciting to work with artisans from other parts of the world, especially with artisans with as much experience as those of le 19M’s Maisons d’art. Nothing excites us nore than learning and also being able to share our experiences and knowledge. The contrast is clear and surely we will generate new lines of research and work, since in my country, artisans usually work in their localities and in their homes with manual processes.”
